Flawless Color Changes in Amigurumi: How to Eliminate the Jog

Want to get rid of that annoying step (jog) during color changes in your amigurumi? Discover the easiest and smoothest techniques here!

Flawless Color Changes in Amigurumi: How to Eliminate the Jog

Do you get annoyed by that little step (the 'jog') when it’s time to change colors while crocheting your favorite amigurumi? Because of the nature of spiral crochet, rounds stack continuously on top of each other, creating a slight height difference. When you introduce a new color, this difference becomes a visible, awkward step. But don't worry! At Ayla Wan Gurumi, we have gathered the most effective jogless color change techniques to make your handmade toys look incredibly neat and professional.

The Spiral Dilemma: Why Does the Jog Happen?

In amigurumi, we usually crochet in continuous spirals without joining rounds. This prevents harsh seams but creates a staircase effect at the beginning of each new round. When switching colors, this height difference is highlighted. Let's look at how we can eliminate this jog and achieve smooth transitions!

1. The Slip Stitch (Sl St) Transition Method

This is one of the most popular and easiest methods, especially when crocheting striped clothes or clean geometric patterns on your toys.

  • Step 1: Work the last single crochet of the old color until you have two loops on your hook. Pull through the new color to complete the stitch.
  • Step 2: Instead of making a normal single crochet into the first stitch of the new round, make a slip stitch (sl st).
  • Step 3: Continue with normal single crochets (sc) from the second stitch onward.
  • Step 4: When you complete the round and reach that initial slip stitch, simply crochet a regular single crochet right into it. This flattens the step beautifully.

2. The Invisible/Seamless Color Change

This technique yields incredibly clean results. If done correctly, it makes the color transition almost completely invisible!

  • Step 1: Complete the last stitch of your old color with the new color (classic transition).
  • Step 2: Insert your hook into the back loop only (BLO) of the first stitch of the new round and make a slip stitch.
  • Step 3: In the exact same stitch, insert your hook through both loops (normal stitch) and make a regular single crochet.
  • Step 4: Continue crocheting normally. This double-stitch technique softens the sharp height jump between the rounds.

Ayla's Tip: After changing colors, gently pull the tails of both yarn colors on the inside of your work and tie them in a secure knot. This keeps the transition stitches tight and prevents them from stretching over time.

3. The Modified Single Crochet Method

If you are doing frequent color changes and want a quick fix without extra slip stitches, try this:

  • After switching to the new color, make the first stitch of the new round slightly looser than usual.
  • When you finish the round and come back to this stitch, crochet into it normally. This subtle slack cushions the spiral climb, tricking the eye into seeing a straight line.

Golden Rules for Flawless Color Work

  • Tension Control: Keep your tension consistent. Tight stitches during color changes will warp the fabric, while loose ones will leave unsightly gaps.
  • Use the Right Hook: A hook that matches your yarn weight perfectly ensures that the stitches remain uniform, making transitions look seamless.

We hope these tips help elevate your amigurumi projects to a whole new level of craftsmanship! We would love to see your beautiful, jogless creations.
